From Chester County and Clemson to MUSC and Jernigan Orthodontics, Dr. Catoe’s path has always been shaped by curiosity, purpose, and people.

An engineer’s eye for a better smile

A proud native of Chester County, SC, I graduated from Lewisville High School in 2013, then headed off to Clemson University with big plans and intentions of becoming an engineer. Since I’ve always enjoyed puzzles and focusing in on the little details, I figured engineering would be right up my alley. But, after a handful of classes prompting me to question whether or not I’d enjoy spending most of my days sitting behind a desk, along with some time spent shadowing dentists (thanks to my Mom being a dental hygienist), I realized orthodontics combined some of those engineering principles with a career that would allow me to help people feel confident in their smiles.

From dental school to specialty care

With my new plan set, I went on to earn my dental degree from MUSC in Charleston, then had the opportunity to practice as a general dentist in West Ashley and serve on some mission trips in South America, too. I returned to MUSC to complete specialty training in orthodontics and am now grateful to be able to work in the field that I love.

Family, fresh air & the long game

Along the way to becoming an orthodontist, I married my college sweetheart, Caroline (who I had a crush on since high school), and we had our son, JB, in early 2025. Outside of work, I try to spend as much time as I can with those two, typically somewhere outside since JB loves the outdoors. I’m also an avid cyclist and golfer—two pursuits that keep me grounded and give me more than a healthy appreciation for the values of patience and persistence. Most weekends, you can find me at Chester ARP church, and having a meal with family, since we’re lucky enough to have nearly everybody live close by!
